Dr. John M. Borchers, DDS (1937–2025)

Dr. John M. Borchers graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1976 and opened his first dental practice in the small farming community of Mason, Michigan. There, he and his wife, Mary Borchers, raised their children while also farming, as Dr. Borchers practiced dentistry for seven years. Mary enjoyed a career with Michigan Bell during that time.

Seeking a warmer climate, they moved to Sarasota, Florida, in the summer of 1983. Together, they established a large dental practice on Tuttle Avenue, later expanding to a location in Venice, Florida. Their mission was to provide affordable, high-quality general dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, and implant dentistry to the community.

Over the next 40 years, Gentle Dental Inc. grew to include seven locations along Florida’s west coast. Despite this growth, Sarasota and Venice always remained home to Dr. Borchers and his wife.

Dr. Borchers continued practicing dentistry until the age of 84. Throughout his career, he was grateful to work alongside many talented and dedicated dental professionals who continue to serve patients today, including Dr. James Burne, DDS; Dr. Katrina Binnstock, DDS; Dr. Claudia Moricz, DDS, MS; and Dr. Oleg Kalsow, DMD, MS. They are supported by an exceptional team whose combined service exceeds 100 years across the Sarasota and Venice offices. Patients can remain confident in the continued quality and care provided by this experienced team.

Beyond dentistry, Dr. Borchers was a lifelong entrepreneur. During their years in Florida, he and Mary owned and operated several businesses across various service industries, including an automobile business, a trucking company, a dental laboratory, a western shop, a commercial contracting business, custom harvesting operations, and a professional tree service.

Dr. Borchers and his wife Mary, married for 68 years, were lifelong Christians. They cherished time with their family, enjoyed boating along Florida’s west coast and the Florida Keys, dining together, and serving the Sarasota and Venice communities.
